Remembrance Day – Monday 11 November
Remembrance Day is an opportunity for us to pay tribute to those men and women who have given their lives in the service of our country.
Students will recognise this day of importance with House based Remembrance Day Liturgies. Such commemoration helps us reflect on events that have shaped our history and on the lives that have been impacted by the will of others. As we reflect on those who have offered themselves for the cause of freedom, let us not forget the part our faith can play in bringing peace to our world.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
Ever Patient Teacher,
show us the ways of tolerance, teach us the ways of justice.
Draw us all in heart and mind nearer Jesus Christ your son,
Prince of peace. Amen

St Vinnies Christmas Appeal
The Christmas season is near and is a joyful time for many. Yet as we know, it can be a challenging time for less fortunate people within our community. Many people within our Riverland community struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Inflation, housing stress, high energy prices, and the rising cost of daily essentials make it difficult for families to thrive.
As a school we are taking part in the Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Vinnies Christmas Appeal aims to provide immediate relief from bills, and the basics such as food and clothing, so that families have a chance to survive and celebrate this Christmas.
Further information will be shared with students and families outlining the range of activities our students will engage in over the last few weeks of term in support the Christmas Appeal.
Mr Nathan Hayes, Principal
Faith, Fun, Feed
Our Year 8 students have been hard at work planning an exciting event in partnership with the Youth and Family Ministry Team of the Riverland – an Outdoor Cinema Night! After pitching their ideas for an inclusive event, the students selected this fun, community-focused afternoon/evening. The event is open to all young people around the Riverland including families, students, and the local community. Please refer to the above flyer for full event details. If you'd like to attend, a consent form is available on Edsmart. We hope to see you there!
Advent
Advent is an important time in the Catholic faith, marking the four weeks leading up to Christmas. It’s a time of waiting, hope, and prayer as we prepare spiritually to welcome the light of Christ into our lives. The Advent season begins on Sunday, December 1, 2024. It marks the start of the liturgical year in the Catholic Church and spans the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. Advent lasts until December 24, the day before Christmas Eve. We will start the celebrations for Advent earlier in the term.
Advent is a time of preparation, hope, and reflection, as we wait for the celebration of Jesus' birth on Christmas Day. Each Sunday of Advent represents one week of preparation, traditionally marked by lighting a candle on the Advent wreath, and is often associated with themes of hope, peace, joy, and love.
As we approach the Advent season, a time of joyful anticipation and preparation for the birth of Jesus, our Year 8 Religion classes are helping our school community get ready for Christmas. They are busy creating Advent calendars for each homegroup, which will guide us in reflecting on this special time.
Christmas Appeal
In the spirit of giving, Ignis House will be helping to run fundraisers to support families in need through the Vinnies and Riverland Christmas Appeal. We will be collecting donations in our Charity House Bins, including long-life food, Christmas decorations, teenage gifts or other gifts (unwrapped), puddings, and any other items you think could help bring Christmas cheer to families in the Riverland. Your generous donations will make a real difference to those in need.
All the best to Mr Cotter and Mrs Meuret!
We would like to wish Mr. Cotter and Mrs. Meuret safe travels as they embark on a scoping trip to Thailand. They will be visiting a refugee community in Umphang, where they will focus on building relationships and gaining a deeper understanding of how we can support this community in need. This trip will also help provide a meaningful cultural immersion experience for future Year 11 students, allowing them to connect with and learn from a whole new way of life. We look forward to hearing about their journey and the opportunities it will create for our school community! Safe travels!
Prayer
Dear Lord,
We thank You for the blessing of this new day. We ask that You watch over Mrs Meuret, Mr Cotter and their companions as they travel to Thailand next week.
Bless them with good health, clear guidance, and open hearts as they meet the refugee community in Umphang.
May their trip be filled with meaningful encounters, and may they find ways to build strong, loving relationships that will benefit our students and the people they will serve.
Give them wisdom and inspiration as they seek to create opportunities for future collaboration, and help them to be instruments of Your peace and compassion.
We also pray for the refugee families in Umphang, that they may feel God’s presence and love in their lives, and that this journey may lead to lasting and meaningful connections between our community and theirs.
We place their travels and their mission into Your hands, trusting in Your guidance and care.
Mary, our Mother, pray for them and keep them safe.
Mrs Sheridan Bonney, Assistant Principal, Religious Identity and Mission
It’s been an exciting start to term 4 at St Francis of Assisi College! Our classrooms and outdoor spaces have been buzzing with activity as students across all year levels engage in diverse and hands-on learning experiences.
Our Year 10 students are diving into practical and skill-building projects across several subjects. In Metal Technology, they’re channelling their creativity and design skills into crafting fire pits—a project that blends artistry with practical craftsmanship. Over in Food and Hospitality, students have been perfecting barista techniques, gaining confidence and experience in preparing quality coffee techniques they’ll carry with them into future employment. Meanwhile, our Outdoor Education students enjoyed the thrill of surf camp, mastering new skills and making unforgettable memories on the waves.
Year 9 students are equally busy with projects that span science, civics, and outdoor education. In Science, they’re developing models of the carbon cycle, which bring to life key processes that drive Earth's natural systems. For Civics and Citizenship, they’re learning about Australia's Court System, a topic that will provide valuable context for their upcoming visit to Canberra. In Outdoor Education, students have been focusing on bike safety and maintenance. They’ve enjoyed the chance to practice their skills while riding around Renmark as they prepare for their day-long bike trek.
Our Year 8 cohort is also busy in their learning journeys. In Science, students are uncovering the fascinating world of rocks, learning about different types and how they form, which connects them to Earth’s natural processes. In the Kitchen Garden, they’re developing a green thumb, planting herbs and vegetables in garden beds—hands-on learning that ties to sustainability and self-sufficiency. In Mathematics, students are diving into statistics, representing data, and creating frequency tables, essential skills that build their analytical thinking.
Year 7 students have been diving into several core subjects. In Civics and Citizenship, they’ve been learning about the Australian Constitution, exploring its significance and the principles it upholds. In Health and Physical Education (HPE), they’ve been working on building technical and tactical skills in cricket, showing great enthusiasm on the field. English classes have been lively as well, with students honing their creative writing skills and crafting their own short stories, exploring the art of storytelling from start to finish.
It’s been a fantastic start to the term, with plenty of learning that connects academic concepts to real-world experiences. We look forward to seeing the continued growth and achievements of our students as they round out Term 4 with confidence and curiosity.
Mrs Natalie Meuret, Leader of Learning
We look forward to meeting our 2025 Year 7 cohort at our two formal transition days held on Thursday November 28th and Friday November 29th.

On Friday, 25th of October, our school had the honor of hosting our very first Twilight Open Garden as part of the Riverland Rose and Garden Festival. The event was a beautiful blend of creativity, sustainability, and community spirit.
The highlight of the evening was the stunning artwork displayed by our talented Year 9 students. As part of their integrated unit of study, which combined elements of Religion, HASS, and the visual arts, students explored the concepts of ethical and non-ethical artworks, the common good, and plagiarism. They used recyclable materials to create art that reflected the natural beauty of the Riverland region and the wonders of creation.
These thought-provoking and visually striking pieces encouraged all who attended to reflect on the importance of sustainability, creativity, and the world around us. The students’ work truly captured the essence of our region, adding a unique and meaningful touch to the Rose Festival.
Thank you to everyone who attended, supported our students, and helped make the Twilight Open Garden a memorable success. Proceeds from the evening go to the Riverland Christmas Appeal.
We look forward to future events where we can continue to showcase the incredible talent and vision of our students.
Our Year 9 students are gearing up for a challenging goal in Outdoor Education!
Recently, they completed a practical 9km ride to the Renmark Fountain, focusing on building not only their riding skills but also essential soft skills like teamwork, communication, and self-determination. This ride is just the beginning, as they prepare to tackle a 20km or even 30km ride by the end of the term.
On Saturday 26th October, our Senior and Junior Rowing Squad competed in the Waikerie Omnium Regatta. This was the second time this event has been held and it attracted a number of clubs from Adelaide. Our crews competed in all three events, starting with a 1000m race, followed by a 2000m time trial, finishing off with a 500m sprint.
Tate, Reece and Harry were lucky to share a boat with Renmark Rowing Club Captain, and former SASI rower, Tom Sullivan, for three events. Italo Vadaro then jumped in for the 2000m time trial to support. Billie, Riley and Jadyn were joined by Mrs Turnbull, who found it a real pleasure rowing with these young athletes. This meant our crews were competing in the club category, however we did manage some success. The boys’ crew winning the 500m sprint and the girls finishing ahead of an Adelaide Uni women’s crew across all three events!
Students displayed great sportsmanship, determination, and grit in some windy conditions. Another fun day of racing and learning. A huge thank you to all the families for showing up and supporting our young rowers!
Mrs Stephanie Turnbull, Rowing Program Coordinator, Rowing Coach & Learning Support
This year, Renmark Rowing Club will host the Riverland Regatta and 2nd Grade State Champs on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December. This event is a major fundraiser for the Club, which due to our strong partnership, means it’s an opportunity to assist in raising funds to support our St Francis Rowing Program.
The Riverland Regatta is one of the largest events on the Rowing SA calendar and sees many clubs and schools travel to our region. At their last event in 2021, there were 866 rowers who competed in 220 races across the 2 day’s. It is a great opportunity to get a taste for what the sport has to offer.
We are seeking members of our community who are interested in volunteering to support this major fundraising event. People can opt into specific duties, and state availability. All families will receive an Edsmart Form seeking EOI before a more comprehensive list is circulated.
Stephanie Turnbull, Rowing Program Coordinator & Rowing Coach
