On-Water Session

On-water training is a key component of our program. Initially students are required to wear a lifejacket during any Learn to Row or Come 'n Try  sessions. Once opting to join the program, a controlled capsize event is held during which students prove their swimming capabilities. On successful completion of the exercise students continue their on-water rowing without the need wear a lifejacket

Participation

Students are expected to demonstrate a willingness to participate in all set trainings. Rowing is a technical and physically demanding sport; it takes time to learn the skills to row and build a strong base.

Quads + Doubles + Singles

Coxed quads are our priority boats when students are first learning the skills to row. These boats provide  stability and the opportunity to develop teamwork. If opting to join the Rowing Program, there will be opportunities to train in doubles and singles, as well as coxed quads.

Working Together as a Crew

Training and racing crews can vary from week to week. Providing students opportunities to develop their skills in working with others to achieve a shared goal.

Strength and Conditioning

Strength and conditioning sessions are held in the College Multipurpose Room.

During HPE and Learn to Row sessions, the strength and conditioning focus is circuit training, introducing students to fundamental movement patterns.

As students progress, the focus moves to strength training. Juniors are guided through a generic strength program, while Seniors can opt to receive a personalised training program following 1:1 discussions to tailor to individual needs and goals.

We strive to improve student cardiovascular and muscular endurance, strength and power, as well as incorporating a huge conditioning focus in all sessions to support students through their growth and development.

Coxswain

Coxswains play a vital role in our program. They have the responsibility of steering, motivating, and otherwise communicating with the team and leading them during the race.

On completion of the HPE Rowing Unit Year 7's can join the program as coxswains. Students who have an interest in learning the more technical side of rowing and have the confidence to support and drive a team of older peers will work closely with coaches and teaching staff to carry out this role.

Students can opt to continue through our program solely as a coxswain if they wish too. It is a great way of being involved in a team sport and develops strong leadership skills.
